Day Light Savings: Springing Forward with a Picnic on the Twelve Mile River, Cateechee, South Carolina

The days are growing longer and springing forward with the time change today extends the sunshine, albeit cutting an hour of sleep off. What’s a person to do but to catch the rays on the riverbanks and perhaps rock out to the humms of the rapids.

While seeking a different venue (my digital map wasn’t working properly) I came upon the river and it’s idealic location, simply because Lay Bridge Road is closed/blocked off, allowing a pseudo parking area to be created and locals/adventureres to enjoy the serenic setting. Catechese Dam on lay bridge road is also a minor historical site as well.

I stopped by the local store and chose a few items for a picnic, sticking my purchase in a re-usable small shopping bag as I don’t currently own an actual picnic basket and the durable bag makes it easy to carry my food items to and from the site (plus, the handles don’t dig into my fingers, especially important when carrying items on an adventure!)

While I am a fairly skilled person I realized that hunting and gathering for my food isn’t really conducive for feeding myself, packing a picnic is a very affordable way to eat well without breaking the bank or spending a small fortune on take-out (my entire picnic would have easily fed 2-3 people for less than $8 total.) I usually pack a bit extra–in case I stay out a bit longer than expected, meet a new friend, etc-one may never know what excitement adventures lead too and who doens’t like good snacks and food to eat and share?

The weather has been dreary, grey rainy skies lately and with a clear, sunshine filled cool day, it was a lovely adventure to enjoy the river and lay on the banks and soak in the sun, eat my picnic and enjoy the sounds of nature serenade me with their melody. A special treat? A group of 4 kayakers paddled by with their colorful paddles and head gear on!

A little video I snapped of the river, about 1/4 mile from the historical damn sign

Guest Chef Kevin Harris and his Sous Chef, Kota, homemade Pizza

My dear and beloved Bestest Friend, hailing from Northeast Colorado, is quite talented in the kitchen, with his trusty, cheese-tax collecting dog, Kota.

The dough recipe he used can be seen here, it’s so easy!

Kevin described the pizza making process as super easy, using the following ingredients:

Mozzerrella Cheese

The pizza dough (made from the recipe)

Marinara sauce, homemade or jarred he says is fine

Pepperoni sliced, prepackaged

Spread out the dough to the desired pizze size, lay it on the pizza stone or tray

smear the marinara sauce as the base

Sprinkle lightly or heavily the mozzarella cheese, to preference, give a sprinkle of the cheese as tax to the dog.

Top with Pepperoni (and/or other toppings)

Bake at 350 degrees Farhenheit for 30-40 minutes

Cut the pie into 4 or 8 slices and Enjoy!

Nantahala National Park, Whitewater Falls, and a work out-Chasers/Sapphire North Carolina

I am not sure of the history but dang, the area is absolutely stunning, not only the drive to get there from Pickens County, South Carolina to the National Park, even in early December, was beyond compare!

The leaves, what few remain, are still very colorful as the remininents of Autumn linger on and the weather very mild, sunny but with a cool breeze– perfect for a trail, a wooden staircase, and a wonderful waterfall just over the state line in the Blue Ridge Parkway and Nantahala National Park.

The trail walk and stairs to the waterfall and returning to my vehicle at the parking area took me almost an hour (which definitly got my heart rate up!) and it’s rated moderate.

Recently I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and prediabetic/diabetic and was put on medicaiton. With this diagnosis, I would like to kick it once and for all and get healthier, so choosing a fun way to get out and get more active, in addition to other lifestyle and dietary changes, more adventures are to come!

Hartwell-Georgia on my mind-a picnic on the Savannah River

Enjoying a long weekend with fine weather calls for a small adventure, crossing state lines to go into Georgia-with an easy picnic.

Okay, I “cheated” with the picnic, picking up some bagged food to enjoy on my outing, but the beautiful late autumn colors, a little fire in the perma-grill, and spectacular views, listening to the songs of the river and chirping of the birds, well worth it!

Located just outside Hartwell, Georgia, the Savannah River location, just beyond the Savannah Hydro-damn is quite stunning; an easy drive without any gate or tag fees, it’s quite a lovely place to enjoy the tranquility, enjoy an easy picnic and the splendor of God’s wonderous works.

A little “Moore”-beautiful Headstones at Flat Rock Baptist Church, Oconee County, South Carolina

My sweetness and I went out on a lovely date this evening—on a great cemetary crawl near Walhalla, South Carolina.

My Sweetness is shown in the pictures admiring the great masonary work while I walked around, admiring the different inscriptions–the cemetary is easy to find but take comfortable shoes as the ground is a bit uneven and some of the graves are sunken–spooky!

The Thunder Rolls in Upstate South Carolina

The heat and humidity have been super high in the Upstate and boy, are we all feeling it! The winds have picked up, hopefully to help curb this heat spell (it’s summer in the South, afterall.)

The clouds have rolled in and woosh, look at that rain and hear that thunder clap!

Swimming daycation at Lake Jocasse, Devil’s Fork State Park, South Carolina

A beautiful, cleary, perfect day filled with sunshine and great weather! My Sweetness (aka my boyfriend) heard about Lake Jocasse from a a local South Carolina native (he is originally from Rhode Island, myself from the mid-west). A new adventure and location awaited us as we used the GPS to get us there! About an hour from Clemson, South Carolina, Devil’s Fork State Park is located in Oconee County, near the tiny town of Salem, South Carolina.

The lake itself was originally man made but it’s fed by local streams and more, keeping the water Very cool and wonderful. A tiny beach was created and a swimmer’s area is marked off with a yellow bouy line for a no-wake zone. While boating tours are offered (for a price), we decided to set up picnic in the grilling and table areas and hit the little beach for swimming!

The lake does cover up an old cemetery; gleaning from a a bit of research, the bodys were exhumed and relocated but the the village and cemetery are under the lake now. How the State park earned the named of “Devil’s Fork” is unknown to me but it sounds like something from the movie “Romancing the Stone” with Michael Douglas where he and Kathleen Turner have to use a treasure map and go past the Devil’s Fork to find the good stuff.

There were lots of families there today and at a neighboring picnic spot, the family was playing a variety of Mexican style tradiotional mariachi style music, which added to the ambiance of the day.

I swam from the beach to the no wake yellow buoy twice, which means my swimming in the pool is paying off as well (I swim several time as a week in an indoor salt water pool at a Rec Center. I used to be a lifeguard many many years ago, too). The water was cool/cold and super refreshing. While swimming around, one can watch the motor boats and kayaks, conoes and so forth, which are fun to watch.

Definitly 2 thumbs up for a great place and an lovely place to visit for a day-cation.
